"Sebnitz, Sachsen September 1959. Auf dem August - Bebel Platz."

Picture 33: September 1959 in the provincial town of Sebnitz (in Saxony): the slogan on the banner says: "We workers in the production of artificial flowers demand: Germany needs a peace treaty!". Thus the demand of Krushchev's memorandum of November 1958 (see picture 32) is presented as being an expression of "the people's will". Apart from the fact that workers from state factories never put up such banners spontaneously, it remains an open and interesting question what idea of a peace treaty (and a unified Germany) the "workers in the production of artificial flowers" in the town of Sebnitz may have had in their minds - perhaps also consciously or unconsciously diverting from official propaganda.
