Situated right in the city centre, the Brandenburg Gate is one of the symbols of Berlin, and it became a symbol of its division as it stood nearly precisely on the border. No-one was able to go through it from 1961 to 1989. In the picture you can see armoured police cars positioned as a demonstration of strength and readiness for action against any possible interference from the West.
