Picture 13: Wolliner Straße, another road off Bernauer Straße, also on 13th August 1961. The guards in uniform are policemen rather than soldiers. The National People’s Army was also in action at this time, but remained in the background, at a minimum distance of 1 kilometer from the border. However, a month after the building of the Wall, the „border police“ was formally integrated into the army and re-named „detachment of border guard troops of the National People’s Army“.
