Picture 42: The sign over the kitchen door reads: „Working people in town and country! Be prepared for the armed defence of our homeland!“ All working adults are addressed here. The sign is inciting people to join the workers‘ militia (see pictures 16 and 17) or the National People’s Army. Until the introduction of national service in 1962, recruitment of soldiers was a major problem in the GDR.
