"HO Laden in Bad Schandau."

Picture 39: The sign in the shop window says: "This shop is open on Sunday, 30th August, from 1pm to 5pm. We are hereby fulfilling the commitment we took on at the "conference of activists"".
This shop belongs to a state-owned commercial chain, the so-called "HO" shops. Shops and services were nationalized more gradually and cautiously than industry and agriculture. Since wages were fixed independently of work performance, motivating the workers was always a problem. Campaigns such as competing for the title "activist of the socialist way of working" were an attempted remedy for this, since the title carried financial reward.
